Bristol and Levi are splitsville
No one could have predicted:
Levi Johnston and Bristol Palin, the teenage daughter of Gov. Sarah Palin, have broken off their engagement, he said Wednesday, about 2 1/2 months after the couple had a baby.Ex-squeeze me? Someone was trying to cash in on the Palin name? And they don't mean Michael Palin? Perhaps she means that Levi was doing something to make some cash off the notoriety? Well, it would be irresponsible not to speculate ...
Johnston, 19, told The Associated Press that he and 18-year-old Bristol Palin mutually decided "a while ago" to end their relationship. He declined to elaborate as he stood outside his family's home in Wasilla, about 40 miles north of Anchorage.
He also said some details of the breakup, rumors of which had been swirling on the Internet, were inaccurate.
Bristol Palin said in a statement issued through a spokeswoman for her mother's political action committee that she was "devastated."
"Unfortunately, my family has seen many people say and do many things to 'cash in' on the Palin name," she said. "Sometimes that greed clouds good judgment and the truth."
Look, I don't mean to make light of the end of this relationship, especially where a young child is involved. (That's why I didn't go with my first inclination, which was to make this a "Daily Schadenfreude.") But did anyone seriously think Bristol and Levi were going to live happily ever after -- especially after Sarah Palin had Levi flown to Minnesota and paraded before the Republican National Convention as though they were all one big, happy (albeit grossly dysfunctional) family?
Well, I feel bad for Bristol, Levi, and young Tripp. But, like Russia, you could have seen this coming from Sarah's house.
