Damon Weaver gets his wish

Congratulations are in order once again for Pahokee's favorite budding journalist, Damon Weaver. Yesterday the 11-year-old got what he'd been after for almost a year: an exclusive interview with President Obama.

The 11-year-old's fame is increasing now that he finally scored an interview with President Barack Obama on Thursday. The 12 questions Damon asked, which focused primarily on education, was filmed as part of an education program that will be broadcast to schools around the nation next month.

The talk shows led the news with a typhoon in Taiwan, health care reform and wildfires in California. And soon, it was Damon's turn. His classic interview was mentioned on Good Morning America and the Today Show.

And Damon was all smiles as he talked with The Early Show Weather Anchor Dave Price about the interview he's called a dream come true. Price told Damon it was an honor to speak with him and he asked Damon what he thought about Obama.

"President Obama is so nice," Damon said. "I expected him to be like he was ... the President is a normal person."

He talked about the President like they were friends, and, well, maybe they are. At the end of yesterday's interview, he called Obama his homeboy.
This is fast becoming Damon's shtick: last year, he proclaimed that then-Senator Joe Biden was his homeboy, too.

Anyway, here's Damon's full interview with the president:

Not to be too self-aggrandizing here, but we knew about Damon before you did ... back when Blast Off! was ensconced in Palm Beach County.* We told you he'd get to the White House eventually ... largely on the strength of this video, which Blast Off! brought your way in December:

Nice work, Damon, and congratulations.

* Just teasing ya here. :)

10-year-old reporter wants interview with Obama

Remember Damon Weaver? He's the fifth-grader from Pahokee who famously called Joe Biden "my homeboy" after interviewing the now-VP-elect for his school's closed-circuit TV broadcast.

Now he's after a bigger catch: Barack Obama.

"Hello, President-elect Obama. I am Damon Weaver and I want to interview you," the video opens.

[...]

Damon has a plane ticket and a spot reserved at a hostel in Virginia during inauguration week. His school is trying to raise about $4,000 to pay for the trip.

In his video, he tells Obama he'll be in Washington all week, waiting for a call. Damon is going with fellow student Alysia Boldin, who will operate the camera, their parents, a teacher and the school's television adviser.

Damon's already received some big-time support for his interview. The Miami Heat's Dwyane Wade agreed to play Obama one-on-one if Damon gets the interview, but he wouldn't promise to let the commander-in-chief win.

"Sorry kid, can't do that," Wade said. "Can't let the president beat me."
Young Damon is no publicity hound -- he really knows his stuff:

Damon recently asked Wade whom he voted for.

When the Heat star said Obama, Damon replied: "I thought you would have voted McCain. Don't you make more than $250,000 a year? You know Barack Obama's gonna raise your taxes?"
I'd say Damon's about due for another homeboy. How about it, Mr. President-elect? The interview would be terrific ... and how can you pass up a chance for a one-on-one with Dwyane Wade or his teammate Shawn Marion?

Check out the video for yourself. The kid's got chops, no doubt about it ...

"Just have your people call my people." Ha!

And the children shall lead us, part 2

Now this is change we can believe in, my friends.

Nine-year-old Damon Weaver of Kathryn E. Cunningham/Canal Point Elementary School, in far northwestern Palm Beach County on the shores of Lake Okeechobee, is giving the mainstream corporate media a run for their money. Check out his report on Sen. Joe Biden's recent visit to West Palm Beach:

Wow. Won't it be refreshing to have a vice president who, you know, actually knows what a vice president does?! And, unlike the incumbent, he's human, with a heart and everything! Cool!

Best line: "Senator Biden is now my homeboy." Sweet.
