If you spend any time at my place, you know I'm a huge fan of broadband access and municipal wi-fi networks. I believe that broadband access is to the 21st century what rural electrification was to the 20th. (And believe me - had you grown up on a farm as I did, you appreciate rural electrification.) So I am glad to see this happening.
The good folks at Open Left are having a discussion on
broadband access issues. Go read.
Apparently Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Illinois) is planning on introducing legislation with
the following core principles:
Broadband must be universal and affordable;
We must preserve an online environment for innovation; and
We must ensure that this technology allows more voices to be heard.
The really cool part? This whole process is an exercise in Open Legislation - anyone with Teh Intertubes can register, log into Open Left and give input on the process.
Wikipedia meets the
Legislative Drafting Manual.
Sounds good to me, Senator. I'm on board.
