Well, that didn't take long
Sara Gonzalez, whose questionable appointment by Gov. Crist to head a state agency drew a lot of criticism from around the state, resigned today, just two weeks after she was named to chair the Public Employee Relations Commission.
Gonzalez's appointment as chair the Public Employee Relations Commission raised questions because her background was as a dermatologist's assistant and the qualifications section of her application to was virtually blank.Well, give her credit for doing the right thing ... although I can't help but wonder how much pressure she got from the governor's office to step down and avoid embarrassing him further. Not that it's her fault exactly -- but a Senate confirmation hearing would have been very interesting indeed.
In the past, the position has been held by a lawyer, and the two unsuccessful applicants included a labor lawyer and another person with 20 years experience working with unions. Gonzalez has an undergraduate degree in biology and a master's in physician assistant studies.
"I have looked forward to public service and working on the commission," she wrote in her resignation letter to Crist. "However, given the response to may appointment, I feel that it is best for the commission that someone else serve as chair."
