Full of sound and fury, signifying nothing
Drunky McStagger says the U.S. will "take the leading role in a global bid to fight climate change" ... but there's a catch.
But Bush said on the sidelines of a Group of Eight summit that any global accord would have to include major developing countries that are quickly joining the ranks of top polluters.Nice move, Drunky. You can go on record as being environmentally conscious (if only in the sense that your environment actually may go beyond empty vodka bottles and tear-streaked pillowcases), knowing full well that, at least in the short term, it's highly unlikely that China and India will have to obey Kyoto-style protocols. Therefore, you can give lip service to global warming while keeping your base -- the wealthy polluters -- fat and happy and rich. Very shrewd.
"Our role is a bridge between people in Europe and others like India and China. If we want them at the table it is important that we give them the opportunity to set an international goal," he said.
"By 2008 the world's emitters of greenhouse gases should come together. Nothing is going to happen in terms of substantial reduction unless China and India participate."
It's like me saying I'll register as a Republican as soon as Rush Limbaugh admits to being a drug-addled child molester, or as soon as Joe Klein writes a fact-based column. It ain't gonna happen ...
